The World

In the years before the pandemic, Macau — the only Chinese territory where casinos are legal — put Las Vegas to shame. Macau routinely raked in more than $35 billion in gambling revenues, besting its American rival’s earnings by a factor of five. But under China’s draconian zero-COVID-19 policy, Macau’s glittering casinos went empty. Now, Macau is reopening with casinos desperate to get cash flowing again and make up for losses racked up during the pandemic. The World's Patrick Winn reports.
